قَطَعتَyou traversed البِلادَthe lands فَمِنso, now صاعِدٍascending
بِغَيثِwith the rain of النَوالِbounty وَمِنand now هابِطِdescending
You have crossed the lands, now ascending,
With bounty’s rain, and now descending.
تَمُدُّyou stretch out عَصاكَyour staff إِلىtoward النابِحاتِthe barking female dogs
فَيُعجَبنَso they are amazed مِنat جَأشِكَyour heart الرابِطِsteadfast
You stretch your staff toward the barking dogs,
So they marvel at your steadfast heart.
وَتَغبِطُand you envy كُلّاًeveryone عَلىfor ماwhat حَواهُhe possesses it
وَماand not لَكَfor you فيin العَيشِlife مِنany غابِطِone who envies
You envy everyone for what he possesses,
Yet no one envies you in life.
وَقَفتَyou stood عَلىat كُلِّevery بابٍdoor رَأَيتَyou saw
حَتّىuntil نَهاكَhe stopped you أَبوfather of ضابِطِḌābiṭ
You stood at every door you saw,
Until Abū Ḍābiṭ turned you away.
