    Perhaps some people in prayer niches stirred fear

    with verses, like others who stirred delight in taverns.

    If one who performs prayer seeks deceit through it,

    then one who deliberately abandons it is nearer to God.

    So let no one swell with pride who must return

    to pottery’s clay, pounded for use.

    Perhaps a vessel will one day be made from him,

    and whoever wishes will eat and drink from it.

    فَواهاً لَهُ بَعدَ البِلى يَتَغَرَّبُ

    And he is carried from one land to another, unaware;

    so alas for him: after decay, he wanders abroad!
