Two mountains said, “Our two young ibexes slipped.”
So we ask the Creator for forgiveness.

وَرَمَّناand mended us المَلكُthe King وَأَبراناand made us waste away
The One healed us of our sickness;
and the King mended us and made us waste away.

God made a matter known to us, yet we do not
wash away stains through repentance.

Ignorance emboldened us to sin,
and it set us running toward goodness.

وَكُلُّناand all of us يوجَدُare found أَشراناinsolently exultant
Wrongdoing goaded us on; thus you found us,
every one of us found full of insolence.

I am alive; my sin has laid rust upon
my heart, so I never cease to be bewildered,

parched by summer heat and grief. Who, then,
will go at dawn to Najran’s mosque?

If our two full moons perish, we hope in the One who
bestows riches, and do not petition Badran.

Two traces—of good and evil—are ours;
and reproach overtakes the wealthiest of us.

Two lifetimes have passed for an old man; yet
no habitation is left to one who perishes.

So may God’s mercy be upon a people
I knew on earth as neighbors.

Slumber brought us their greetings;
and how many peers death has annihilated!

خَيرٌgood لِمَنfor one who أُلفِيَwas found غَيراناjealous
Two jealous concerns—for praise and chastity—
are good for one found jealous.

وَيُدلِجُand journeys by night اللَيلَةَtonight أَسراناthe noblest of us
We neglect our captives in the hands of death;
and tonight our noblest travels in the dark.

Two clear paths appeared to us in darkness,
and within it we have glimpsed fires.

وَلَمand did not يَبِتspend the night فيin النَومِsleep سَدراناheedless
If humankind used reason, it would seek guidance,
and would not spend the night heedless in sleep.

Life and death are two bitter things; no good
has carrying ash-wood spears done him.
