أَيَأتيwill there come نَبِيٌّa prophet يَجعَلُmakes الخَمرَwine طِلقَةًlawful and unrestricted
فَتَحمِلَso that it may bear ثُقلاًa burden مِنof هُموميmy cares وَأَحزانيand my sorrows
Will a prophet come who makes wine lawful,
so that it may bear a burden of my cares and sorrows?
وَهَيهاتَand far from it! لَوeven if حَلَّتit became lawful لَماthen not كُنتُI would be شارِباًa drinker
مُخَفَّفَةًlightening فيin الحِلمِreason كِفَّةَthe scale-pan ميزانيmy balance
Far from it! Even if it were lawful, I would not drink
what would lighten the pan of my scales of reason.
إِذاwhen خَزَنونيthey store me فيin الثَرىthe soil فَمَقالِديthen my keys
مُضَيَّعَةٌneglected لاnot يُحسنُdoes well الحِفظَguarding خُزّانيmy keepers
When they store me in the earth, my keys
will be neglected; my keepers do not guard them well.
كَأَنِّيَas though I were نَبتٌa plant مَرَّpassed يَومٌa day وَلَيلَةٌand a night
عَلَيَّover me وَكاناand the two were مُنفَضَّينِout of provisions فَجَزّانيso they both cut me down
I am like a plant: a day and a night passed
over me, both out of provisions, so they cut me down.
هُماthe two of them بَدَوَِيّانِtwo Bedouins الطَريقَthe road تَعَرَّضاthey both lay in wait
وَبُردَيَّand my two cloaks مِنfrom نَسجِthe weaving الشَبيبَةِof youth بَزّانيthey both stripped me
They are two Bedouins who waylaid the road
and stripped me of my two cloaks, woven of youth.
قَوِيّانِtwo strong ones عَزّانيthey both overpowered me عَلَيهِin this وَأَوقَعاand they both inflicted
بِغَيرِيَupon others ماwhat بيupon me أَوقَعاهُthey both inflicted it فَعَزّانيso they both consoled me
Strong, they overpowered me in this, and inflicted
on others what they inflicted on me, thus consoling me.
وَماand not ضَيَّقاthe two narrowed أَرضيmy land وَلَكِنbut أَراهُماI see them both
إِلىinto الضَنَكِconfinement مِنfrom وَجهِthe face البَسيطَةِof the earth لَزّانيthey both pushed me
They did not narrow my land, yet I see them
pushing me from the earth's broad face into confinement.
وَماand not أَكَلاthe two ate زاديmy provisions وَلَكِنbut أَكَلتُهُI ate it
وَقَدand already نَبَّهانيthey both roused me لِلسُرىfor night travel وَاِستَفَزّانيand they both urged me on
They did not eat my provisions; rather, I ate them,
while they roused me for night travel and urged me on.
وَلَمand did not يَرضَياthey both accept إِلّاexcept بِنَفسيwith my soul مِنَas القِرىhospitality
وَلَوeven if صُنتُهُI kept it safe عَنfrom طارِقَيmy two night visitors لِأَحزانيfor my sorrows
They would accept no hospitality but my soul,
even if I kept it from my two night visitors, reserving it for my sorrows.
وَماand not هاجَstirred ذِكريmy memory بارِقٌa lightning flash نَحوَtoward بارِقٍBariq
وَلاnor هَزَّنيstirred me شَوقٌlonging لِجارَةِfor a female neighbor of هَزّانِHazzan
No lightning flash toward Bariq stirred my memory,
nor did longing for Hazzan's neighbor move me.
بَلِrather الفَتَيانِthe two youths اِعتادَgrew accustomed to قَلبيmy heart أَذاهُماthe harm of them both
يَشيمانِthey both draw أَسيافَthe swords الرَدىof death وَيَهُزّانِand they both brandish
Rather, my heart has grown used to the harm of the two youths,
who draw the swords of death and brandish them.
عَزيزانِtwo mighty ones بِاللَهِthrough God الَّذيwho لَيسَis not مِثلُهُHis equal
يُذِلّانِthey both humble فيwithin مِقدارِهِHis decree وَيُعِزّانِand they both exalt
Mighty through God, who has no equal,
they humble and exalt according to His decree.
وَكَمand how often فَتَكاthe two slew وَالحِسُّwhile sensation قَدalready بانَdeparted عَنهُماfrom them both
بِأَهلِupon the inhabitants of وُهودٍlowlands أَوor جِبالٍmountains وَحِزّانِand rugged heights
How often have they slain, though sensation is absent from them,
people of lowlands, or of mountains and rugged heights!
وَماand not تَرَكاthe two spared تُركَthe Turks القِبابِof the domed tents وَغادَراand the two left
بِرُمحَينِwith two spears أَوor جُرزَينِtwo maces أُسرَةَthe clan of جُرزانِJurzan
They did not spare the Turks of the domed tents, and left
Jurzan's clan felled by two spears or two maces.
سَلاask, you two غابَthe thickets of تَرجٍTarj وَالأُنَيعِمَand al-Unay'im كَمhow many ثَوىdwelt
بِذاكَin that place وَهَذاand this one مِنof أُسودٍlions وَخُزّانِand male hares
Ask, you two, Tarj's thickets and al-Unay'im how many have dwelt
there and here—lions and male hares.
