سَأَخرُجُ بِالكَراهَةِ مِن زَماني

سَأَخرُجُ بِالكَراهَةِ مِن زَماني

وَفي كَشحِيٍّ مِن يَدِهِ قِطاعُ

وَفي كَشحِيٍّ مِن يَدِهِ قِطاعُ

I shall leave my time unwillingly,

And in my flanks lie broad-headed arrows from its hand.

وَما زالَ البَقاءُ يُرِثُّ حَبليَ

وَما زالَ البَقاءُ يُرِثُّ حَبليَ

إِلى أَن حانَ لِلمَرَسِ اِنقِطاعُ

إِلى أَن حانَ لِلمَرَسِ اِنقِطاعُ

And life has kept fraying my cord,

Until the time has come for the rope to snap.

لَبيبُ القَومِ تَألَفُهُ الرَزايا

لَبيبُ القَومِ تَألَفُهُ الرَزايا

وَيَأمُرُ بِالرَشادِ فَلا يُطاعُ

وَيَأمُرُ بِالرَشادِ فَلا يُطاعُ

Calamities befriend the wise man among the people,

And he enjoins right conduct, yet is not obeyed.

فَلا تَأمَل مِنَ الدُنِّيا صَلاحاً

فَلا تَأمَل مِنَ الدُنِّيا صَلاحاً

فَذاكَ هُوَ الَّذي لا يُستَطاعُ

فَذاكَ هُوَ الَّذي لا يُستَطاعُ

So do not hope for goodness from this world,

For that is what cannot be achieved.
