النَفسُthe soul عِندَat the time of فِراقِهاits parting from جُثمانَهاits body
مَحزونَةٌgrief-stricken لِدُروسِat the decay of رَبعٍa dwelling عامِرِthriving
The soul, when it parts from its body,
grieves at the decay of a once-thriving dwelling,
كَحمامَةٍlike a dove صيدَتwas caught فَثَنَّتand then she bent جيدَهاher neck
أَسَفاًin sorrow لِتَنظُرَso she might see حالَthe state of وَكرٍa nest دامِرِruined
like a dove that was caught and then bent her neck
in sorrow, to see the state of a ruined nest.
