Blessed are You: death is ordained for every man,

even if he were one of the stars that journey by night.

And many a man, like an eagle in glory and loftiness,

has fallen to a spear-point like an eagle's primary feather.

And what has eased the misery we endure is that we are

sons of travel, or travelers crossing a bridge.

And no man leaves his world content,

with honor, but oppressed and under compulsion.

And neither learning nor kingship protects a lord

like Qabus in his day, and Fanna Khusraw.

When I meet my family after death,

I shall tell them that I have escaped captivity.

Some have soared like a hundred multiplied by a hundred; yet I remain,

with praise to You, like a fraction multiplied by a fraction.
