قَدindeed صَحِبناwe have accompanied الزَمانَtime بِالرَغمِin spite مِنّاof us
وَهوَwhile it يُرديkills كَماas عَلِمتَyou know الصَحاباthe companions
We have kept company with time against our will,
while, as you know, it brings companions to their deaths.
وَحَلَلناand we dwelt المَضيقَthe narrow place ثُمَّthen أَتَيناwe came to الرَحبَthe open expanse
لَوif only دامَlasted تَركُناour being left وَالرِحاباwith the wide expanses
And we dwelt in a narrow place, then came into the open—
if only we could be left forever amid the wide expanses!
وَالجُسومُand bodies التُرابُdust تَحياlive بِسُقياthrough watering
فَلِهَذاso for this reason قُلناwe said سُقيتِmay you be watered السَحاباthe clouds
And bodies, being dust, live by being watered;
that is why we said, 'May the clouds water you!'
قَدindeed رَضَيناwe accepted الشُحوبَpallor لَوif only كانَwere صَرفُthe vicissitudes الدَهtime (first fragment)
رِtime (final fragment) يَرضىwould be content لِلأَوجُهِfor faces الإِشحاباmaking pale
We would indeed accept pallor, if only time's vicissitudes
were content to make faces pale.
وَضَحِكناand we laughed وَلَيسَand there is not ماwhat يوجِبُprompts الضَحlaughter (first fragment)
كَlaughter (final fragment) لَدَيناwith us بَلbut rather ماwhat يَهيجُrouses اِنتِحاباsobbing
And we have laughed, though no cause for laughter
is ours—only what rouses sobbing.
كَمhow many a أَميرٍprince أُميرَwas tossed about فيin عاصِفاتٍstorm winds
بَعدَماafter حابَhe sinned فيin الحَياةِlife وَحابىand showed favoritism
How many a prince was tossed about in storm winds,
after he sinned in life and showed favoritism.
