    Indeed, cups of wine are like

    swords, with death in their striking edges.

    فَلا يَكُن فوكَ مِن مَغارِبِها

    Its suns are a sun of falsehood that has risen;

    so let your mouth not be among its places of setting.

    And its ants, if they crawl through a body,

    are more harmful to the soul than its property (as written).

    And everything that takes away reason, even if

    different from it, belongs among its kin.

    One who knew its nature tried it,

    and reason is lost in trying it.

    And life may be spent contentedly,

    without gaining what it desires.

    فَلتَتَّقِ اللَهَ في مَشارِبِها

    If she drinks her wine, she fornicates and commits offenses;

    so let her fear God in her drinking.
