وَفَرتُI let grow العارِضَينِboth sides of the beard وَلَمand did not يُعارِضoppose
مَشيبيmy gray hair إِذwhen تَناثَرَit spread مَلقَطاياmy two pincers
I let both sides of my beard grow, and no challenge came
to my gray hair, as it spread, from my two pincers.
وَإِنَّand indeed البيضَthe white hairs مِثلَlike السودِthe black hairs عِنديto me
فَكَيفَso how يَخُصُّsingle out تِلكَthose مُسَلَّطاياmy two assailants
And white hairs are indeed like black ones to me;
how, then, should my two assailants single those out?
مَطايَmy back عَلَيهِupon it لِلأَيّامِfor the days عِبءٌa burden
كَأَنّيas though I were لِلأَذاةِfor suffering مِنَamong المَطاياthe mounts
Upon my back lies the burden of the days,
as though I were one of suffering's mounts.
مَحَلّيmy dwelling إِنif جَلانيdrives me away عَنكَfrom you خَطبٌa calamity
فَمِنthen from خَطَأيmy error تُراحُyou are relieved وَمِنand from خَطاياmy footsteps
My dwelling, if calamity drives me away from you,
you will be relieved of my error and my footsteps.
وَماand not شَعرٌhair بِرَأسِكَon your head فيin عِدادٍnumber
بِأَكثَرَmore numerous مِنthan ذُنوبِكَyour sins وَالخَطاياand misdeeds
And the hairs on your head are not, in number,
more numerous than your sins and misdeeds.

People's gifts are withheld, so seek
the reward of our King, lavish in gifts.
كُفيتُكَI spared you أَنthat تُرابَyou be alarmed الدَهرَever مِنّيby me
وَلَمyet did not تَكفُفyou restrain بُزاتَكَyour hawks عَنfrom قَطاياmy sandgrouse
I spared you ever having to fear me,
yet you did not keep your hawks from my sandgrouse.
