وَمِثلُand the like of رُزءٍan affliction وَجَدناwe felt حِسَّهُits pain وَجَدواthey experienced
Multitudes like us lived before us, then passed away.
And they knew affliction like that whose pain we have felt.
وَالمَجدُand glory لِلَّهِbelongs to God لاno خَلقٌcreature يُشارِكُهُshares with Him
وَآلُand the descendants of حَوّاءَEve ماnot طابواthey were virtuous وَلاnor مَجَدواthey were noble
And glory belongs to God; no creature shares it with Him.
And Eve's descendants were neither virtuous nor noble.
أَمّاas for إِلىto كُلِّevery شَرٍّevil عَنَّarose فَاِنتَبَهواso they awoke

As for every evil that arose, they awoke to it;
Rather, they never slept—yet they slumbered, heedless of piety.
وَالناسُand people يَطغَونَtransgress فيin دُنياهُمُtheir worldly life أَشَراًin wanton pride

And people transgress in their worldly life, in wanton pride;
Were it not for fear, they would neither give alms nor prostrate themselves.
فيin كُلِّevery أَمرِكَaffair of yours تَقليدٌimitation رَضيتَyou were content بِهِwith it
حَتّىeven مَقالُكَyour declaration رَبِّيَmy Lord واحِدٌone أَحَدُunique
In all your affairs there is imitation you have accepted,
Even your declaration, 'My Lord is one, unique.'
