Men have boasted, and in ignorance they boast.

There is no disgrace in devotion, even if the frivolous dismiss it.

Those who forbid you a good deed are those who bid you do it,

and those who enjoin evil deeds are those who forbid them.

I fancied the stars calling: “Desist, band by band!”

Or Suhā said: “The people of earth are heedless.”

The sun has cooked for you what spares a lover of ease

the need to have cooks on earth.

O offspring of humankind, do not boast, for you

are reckoned as motes, or resemble ants.

    وَأَهوَنُ الخَطبِ أَنَّ القَومَ واهونا

    The turns of fate refuse to shorten time by a jot;

and the least of the trouble is that people are frail.
