رَأَيتُ بِجِنحٍ في الزَمانِ حُلوكا

رَأَيتُ بِجِنحٍ في الزَمانِ حُلوكا

وَلِلشَمسِ فيها مَشرِقاً وَدُلوكا

وَلِلشَمسِ فيها مَشرِقاً وَدُلوكا

I saw, at nightfall, darkness in time,

and within it a rising and a setting for the sun.

خَطَبتَ إِلا الدُنيا بِجَهلِكَ نَفسَها

خَطَبتَ إِلا الدُنيا بِجَهلِكَ نَفسَها

فَلم تَستَطِع فيما أَرَدتَ سُلوكا

فَلم تَستَطِع فيما أَرَدتَ سُلوكا

In your ignorance, you wooed none but the world herself,

but could make no progress in what you desired.

وَهَل يَنكَحُ المَرءُ الموَفَّقُ أُمَّهُ

وَهَل يَنكَحُ المَرءُ الموَفَّقُ أُمَّهُ

وَلَو أَصبَحَت بَينَ الرِجالِ هَلوكا

وَلَو أَصبَحَت بَينَ الرِجالِ هَلوكا

And would a rightly guided man marry his mother,

even if she became a wanton among men?

وَكَم حَلَّ فيها مَعشَرٌ بَعدَ مَعشَرٍ

وَكَم حَلَّ فيها مَعشَرٌ بَعدَ مَعشَرٍ

مِنَ الناسِ عاشوا سوقَةً وَمُلوكا

مِنَ الناسِ عاشوا سوقَةً وَمُلوكا

And how many a company dwelt in her, company after company,

of people who lived as commoners and kings.

فَما بَلَّغَتهُمُ مِنكَ بَعدَ رَحيلِهِم

فَما بَلَّغَتهُمُ مِنكَ بَعدَ رَحيلِهِم

أُلوكٌ وَلا أَهدوا إِلَيكَ أَلوكا

أُلوكٌ وَلا أَهدوا إِلَيكَ أَلوكا

So, since their departure, there has come to them from you

no message, nor have they sent a message to you.

وَقَفتَ عَلى أَجداثِهِم وَسَأَلتَهُم

وَقَفتَ عَلى أَجداثِهِم وَسَأَلتَهُم

فَما رَجَعوا قَولاً وَلا سَأَلوكا

فَما رَجَعوا قَولاً وَلا سَأَلوكا

You stood at their graves and questioned them,

but they returned no word, nor did they question you.

وَلا عِلمَ لي مِن أَمرِهِم غَيرَ أَنَّهُم

وَلا عِلمَ لي مِن أَمرِهِم غَيرَ أَنَّهُم

لَو اِنتَبَهوا مِن رَقدَةٍ عَذَلواكا

لَو اِنتَبَهوا مِن رَقدَةٍ عَذَلواكا

And I know nothing of their state, except that

if they awoke from slumber, they would reproach you.

تَخَلَّفتَ بَعدَ الظاعِنينَ كَأَنَّهُم

تَخَلَّفتَ بَعدَ الظاعِنينَ كَأَنَّهُم

رَأوكَ أَخا وَهنٍ فَما حَمَلوكَ

رَأوكَ أَخا وَهنٍ فَما حَمَلوكَ

You stayed behind after those who journeyed away, as though they

saw you as a man of weakness and so did not carry you along.
