    وَالدهرُ مِن عَجَلٍ وَمِن إِروادِ

    Blood quenched a heart's thirst—and that is folly;

And time is made of haste and slow advance.

So evening departures and early departures, familiar things,

And unfamiliar things, towns and desert lands.

And a people's generous man was counted among their misers,

And an ally of miserliness was counted among the generous.

And creatures are of many kinds; their figures are removed

After appearing, by the One who anchors the mountains.

The world's ways, through which life's span is traversed,

Will make the Dhū-titled lords like small herds of camels.

A valley of sudden death—and each of us

Has reached the brink, to be thrust over the valley's edge.

A journey by mortals stretches long, amid a slumber

Of heedlessness, and a shortage of provisions.

And the wounds of the long ages are many,

And the relishes of delectable food are afflictions.

And more painful to a young man than the burden of sickbed visits

Are bouts of misfortune that assail the visitors themselves.

Do not let it grieve you—calamities are many—

That faithless women set out early toward parting.

The days have aimed at us, ever toiling,

To put feet in the place of necks.

So night-visitants came to them with banishing afflictions,

And wailing women rose for them in assemblies.

Worry has its camp in the black cores of hearts,

Because of white hairs, when they encamp at the temples.
