Time has passed, and the living soul has been enamored

of evil since before Abel and Cain.

If people sifted themselves to be rid of dross,

nothing would remain in the sieves.

Or if fire were told, “Single out the guilty,” it would devour

their bodies and refuse to devour their garments.

Do they await anything but the Flood to destroy them,

as is told, or birds in swarming flocks?

    وَكُن نَبيلاً مَعَ القَومِ التَنابيلِ

    So let me not find you base among men of stature;

and be noble among the stunted folk.

Glory be to Him who inspired all kinds of creatures

with an impulse that leads to madness and derangement:

the glances of eyes, the passions of souls, and the drawing

of lips toward touching and kissing.
