Curb your waywardness, for a secret is a trust

entrusted to you; and whenever you grow drunk, you cast it away.

Your aged Layla is no kindly mother,

whether you gave her a byname before the company or named her outright.

    أَصَمتَكِ مِن عُرُضٍ وَما أَصمَيتِها

    And she is the slain one, unharmed by being slain;

she struck you dead from an unexpected quarter, yet you did not kill her outright.

And she betrayed the noble drinkers by revealing what

they conceal; and you traced her lineage to the vines.

And it is as though she were a drop from Dhukāʾ, the sun,

which you decanted and made swell with pearls.

And you gashed her, crimson, without revealing

the whiteness seen in pure white; you made her bleed.

And wine in your palms, which you freely offered,

is like wine in your cheeks, which you guarded.

The choicest wine struck her drinker dead by force,

until she made the living among souls like their dead.

She bore a bay beneath a black one, who had always

fallen short with her bay-red wine amid the two greys—water and milk.
