فَعَلتَyou have acted فِعلَthe action of تِجارٍmerchants مُخسِرينَincurring losses بِهِthrough it

You have acted like merchants who suffer loss thereby.
So worship your God, and you will be granted the best trade.
ماwhat لِلمَذاهِبِwith the creeds قَدalready أَمسَتhave become مُغَيَّرَةًaltered
لَهاthey have اِنتِسابٌan affiliation إِلىto القُدّاحِal-Qaddah أَوor هَجَرِHajar
What has befallen the creeds, now altered,
with affiliations to al-Qaddah or Hajar?
قالواthey said البَريَّةُhumankind فَوضىungoverned لاno حِسابَreckoning لَهاfor it
وَإِنَّماand merely هِيَit مِثلُlike النَبتِplants وَالشَجَرِand trees
They said, "Humankind is ungoverned, with no reckoning for it,
and it is merely like plants and trees."
فَالجاهِليَّةُso the pre-Islamic age of ignorance خَيرٌbetter مِنthan إِباحَتِهِمtheir permissiveness
سَجيَّةَthe disposition of الحارِثِal-Harith الحَرّابِthe warrior أَوor حُجُرِHujr
So better than their permissiveness is the age of ignorance—
the way of al-Harith the warrior or Hujr.
فَماso not أَفادواthey achieved سِوىexcept إِحلالِmaking lawful نِسوَتِهِمtheir women
مُعَرَّضاتٍexposed لِأَهلِto the followers of الباطِنِesoteric doctrine الفُجُرِthe depraved
So they achieved nothing but making their women lawful,
laid open to the depraved followers of esoteric doctrine.
وَإِنَّand indeed أَحسَنَbetter مِنthan تَعظيمِهِمtheir veneration of رَجُلاًa man
صِفراًdevoid مِنَof الحِكَمِwisdom التَعظيمُveneration لِلحَجَرِfor the stone
And indeed, better than their veneration of a man
devoid of wisdom is veneration of a stone.
وَهَلand are ثَعالِبُthe foxes of طَيٍّTayy فيin مَنازِلِهاtheir dwellings

And are the foxes of Tayy, in their dwellings,
anything but wild foxes that spent the night in dens?
ضَلَّwent astray الأَنامُhumankind وَهاذاand this مَنهَجٌa path أُمَمٌstraight
يَهديleads إِلىto الحَقِّthe truth فَاِسلُكهُso follow it وَلاتَجُرِand do not stray
Humankind has gone astray, and this is a straight path,
leading to truth: so follow it and do not stray.
خَلِّleave العِبادَpeople وَماand what اِختارواthey chose فَمُلكُهُمُfor their dominion
إِذاwhen نَظَرتَyou consider كَعَبدٍlike a slave راحَset out مُؤتَجَرِhired
Leave people to what they have chosen; for their dominion,
when you consider it, is like a hired slave who has set out.
يَغنيكَsuffices for you ظِلُّthe shade سَيالٍan acacia يُستَظَلُّone seeks shade بِهِbeneath it
عَنin place of سائِلِflowing التِبرِunworked gold فيin البُنيانِthe buildings وَالحُجَرand the chambers
The shade of an acacia, beneath which one shelters, is enough for you
in place of flowing gold in buildings and chambers.
