Exalted is He who, through death, made our rich man

Like our poor man, and our settled man like the traveler.

How swift is change! If the desert grows bleary-eyed

With its mirage, then night is an eye-painter's kohl.

Escape from sickness is beyond reach, and the form of the

Radiant moon dwindles to a gaunt crescent.

Did you marvel at the newborn child in his cradle?

He had not taken a step—how did he journey by night without mounts?

He lived his two days and was granted life for a third,

Then found rest from life's long-drawn-out span.

How many years his father traveled—yet marvel at him:

He crossed the distance in three stages.

The seas' deep waters were raised before him, and he swam across them,

And he escaped, and found himself safe upon the shore.
