    If the root is found unwholesome,

    then never, through all time, will the branches flourish.

    Nor does a son of the same father and mother agree

    with his brother—how, then, can religious laws agree?

    فَقَد تَخلو مِنَ الرِسلِ الضُروعُ

    So if the giver ceases giving, do not blame him;

    for udders may be empty of milk.

    فَلَولا السَقيُ ما نَمَتِ الزُروعُ

    And remind a heedless group of piety;

    for without watering, the crops would not have grown.

    Children of Eve, how can one be safe from you,

    when no heart has been inhabited by anything but rancor?

    If fate is bound to come,

    then what use are these mail hoods and coats of mail?

    I remind you of your departure, hoping I

    may frighten your hearts—but whom can I frighten?
