A Westerner professed faith through pretence,

and an Easterner countered with pretence.

So be silent, if you wish, or speak:

for no one in this world is pious.

Our garments here are very clean,

yet none of its people has unsullied honor.

And if a young man is raised to lofty ranks,

then that ascent is like his descent.

And someone among us thinks he has already received

bliss—yet, if he knew, he is wretched.

And here we have lacked the brightness of life,

but not the whiteness at the hair's parting.
