إِذاif كَسَرَbreaks العَبدُthe slave الإِناءَthe vessel فَعَدِّهِthen count it
أَذاةًa hurt لَهُto him إِنَّindeed الإِناءَthe vessel إِلىtoward كَسرِbreaking
If a slave breaks a vessel, count it
a hurt to him; the vessel is destined to break.
رَقيقُكَyour slaves أَسرىcaptives فيin يَدَيكَyour two hands فَلاso do not تَكُنbe

Your slaves are captives in your hands, so do not be
harsh with them, and fear God in your treatment of captives.
نَمُرُّwe pass سِراعاًswiftly بَينَbetween عُدمَينِtwo nonexistences ماnot لَناfor us
لَباثٌlingering كَأَنّاas though we were عابِرونَcrossing عَلىover جِسرِa bridge
We pass swiftly between two nonexistences; we do not
linger, as though we were crossing a bridge.
نَسيرُwe journey وَنَسريand travel by night عامِدينَheading لِمَنزِلٍfor a dwelling

We journey and travel by night, bound for a dwelling
whose two hands tighten the noose around the night-traveling wayfarer.
وَقَدand perhaps نَأمُلُwe hope for الآمالَhopes وَهيَthough they are مَنوطَةٌtied

And we may cherish hopes, though they are tied
to the wolf’s tail or the vulture’s neck.
