    فَلَيسَ خِلُّكَ عِندَ الشَرِّ مَأمونا

    Honor your guest, and beware his treacherous schemes;

    for your close friend cannot be trusted in times of evil.

    And neighbors, more often than not, are

    ill-natured, blaming a neighbor or being blamed.

    Some people's eyes sleep, heedless of their treasures,

    while those who seek to harm them do not sleep.

    خانَ اليَمانونَ طُرّاً وَالشَآمونا

    Lodge with whom you will: he will not leave you without a calamity;

    Yemenis have all been faithless, and Syrians too.

    فَالنَبتُ وَالوَحشُ وَالإِنسِيُّ نامونا

    A community of varied kinds—some growing, some inert;

    for plants, wild beasts, and humankind all grow.

    Does the earth feel when trodden, and the dust when

    heaped up, as people feel when they are wronged?

    Or does feeling belong to that sentient world alone,

    so that its beings merit praise or incur blame?

    فَهَل عَلِمتُم يَقيناً ما تُسامونا

    You have spent the night being asked to attain lofty ranks;

    then have you learned for certain what is required of you?
