تَوَهَّمتُI imagined خَيراًgoodness فيin الزَمانِtime وَأَهلِهِand its people
وَكانَand it was خَيالاًan illusion لاnot يَصِحُّholds true التَوَهُّمُthe imagining
I imagined goodness in time and its people,
but it was illusion; such imagining cannot hold true.
فَماfor not النورُthe light نَوّارٌblossom وَلاnor الفَجرُthe dawn جَدوَلٌa stream
وَلاnor الشَمسُthe sun دينارٌa dinar وَلاnor البَدرُthe full moon دِرهِمُa dirham
For light is no blossom, nor is dawn a stream,
nor the sun a dinar, nor the full moon a dirham.
رَأَيتُكَI saw you لَمdid not تَحمَدpraise مِنَamong التُركِthe Turks مَعشَراًa company

I saw that you praised no company of Turks
whose raincloud pours and drizzles desertion;

nor the Kāsik, who in every dark hour hope
for your red cup's rim, while the horses are assailed.
وَقَدand sometimes يَأمُرُcommands اللَهُGod الكَهامَthe blunt blade إِذاwhen نَباit glances off
فَيَفريso it cleaves وَقَدand sometimes يَنهىrestrains الحُسامَthe keen sword فَيَكهُمُso it grows blunt
And sometimes God commands the blunt blade when it glances off,
so it cleaves; sometimes He restrains the keen sword, and it grows blunt.
وَإِنَّكَand indeed you لاno باكٍone weeping عَلَيكَover you مُهَنَّدٌan Indian-steel blade
وَلاnor مُظهِرٌshowing حُزناًsorrow جَوادٌa noble horse مُطَهَّمُwell-formed
And indeed, no Indian-steel blade will weep for you,
nor will a noble, well-formed horse display sorrow.

The pauper among his people equals the clan's king;
and the ravenous earth is scraped open for him, then gulps him down.

And the buried man is unaware as word of him travels by night,
reaching Najd in the farthest lands, and Tihāmah.

Beside a fair-haired woman, bay-red wine flowed from his hand
to his mouth, until a black fetter came upon his leg.

Do you remember, fleet steed, battle and its massed ranks,
when arrows had made you look like a porcupine?

Whenever spearheads were leveled at you, they were driven back
by armor protecting you, impenetrable to thrusts,

for a steel-gray host, where the adversary conceals his words,
and makes himself understood, though he does not understand.

When they draw near, sword blows are their handshakes;
and if they draw apart, their messages are arrows.

They have stratagems in their wars never discovered
by Jadīs, nor used by Jurhum to rule the kingdom.
