بِنتُI have parted عَنِfrom الدُنياthe world وَلاand no بِنتَdaughter ليfor me

I have parted from the world, and have no daughter
in it, nor wife, nor sister.

Yet I have borne a burden of sin that
Bactrian camels cannot carry.
إِنif مَدَحونيthey praise me ساءَنيit distresses me مَدحُهُمtheir praise
وَخِلتُand I imagined أَنيthat I فيin الثَرىthe earth سُختُI had sunk
If they praise me, their praise distresses me,
and I imagine I have sunk into the earth.

My body is filth; it gives me no joy
to be anointed with the musk of words.
مِنfrom وَسَخٍfilth صاغَfashioned الفَتىthe young man رَبُّهُhis Lord
فَلاso let him not يَقولَنَّever say تَوَسَّختُI have become soiled
From filth his Lord fashioned man;
so let him never say, ‘I have become soiled.’

And luck in this first life has bestowed high rank;
but in the afterlife there is no luck.

Thus they said; and their accounts
reveal the substantial and the flimsy.
لَوif جاءَcame مِنfrom أَهلِthe people of البِلىdecay مُخبِرٌa bearer of news
سَأَلتُI would ask عَنabout قَومٍpeople وَأَرَّختُand I would record history
If a bearer of news came from those claimed by decay,
I would ask about people and record their history:

Have those who labored for Paradise won it?
And has Nawbakht dwelt in the Fire?

And it is unjust that you should answer for what
Bahrām and Baydakht have wrought against you.

And part of this world comes from another part;
without sunlight, there would be no moonlight.
