كَأَنَّنيas though I were راكِبُriding اللُجَّthe deep sea الَّذيwhich عَصَفَتraged fiercely
رِياحُهُits winds فَهوَso he is فيin هَولٍterror وَتَمويجِand surging waves
It is as though I ride the deep, lashed
by its winds, amid terror and surging waves.
وَفيand in طِباعِكَyour nature زَيغٌcrookedness وَالهِلالُand the crescent عَلىdespite
سُمُوِّهِits loftiness حِلفُa sworn ally of تَقويسٍcurvature وَتَعويجِand bending
And there is crookedness in your nature; the crescent, despite
its loftiness, is bound to curvature and bending.
فَزِنso weigh مِنَin the sense of الوَزنِweighing لَفظاًa word حينَwhen تُرسِلُهyou utter it
وَزِنand adorn مِنَin the sense of الزَينِadornment إِعطاءًgiving بِتَرويجِthrough facilitation
So weigh—in the sense of weighing—a word when you utter it,
and adorn—in the sense of adornment—your giving by facilitating it.
وَاِنظُرand look إِلىat نَفسِكَyour self اللَومىthe blameworthy بِمَنظَرِهاin its appearance

And look upon your blameworthy self as it is,
even if you attain kingship and a crown.

And seek a husband for your daughter, so he may care for her,
and instill in your son a fear of offspring and marriage.
ماnot اليَسرُaffluence كَالعُدمِlike destitution فيin الأَحكامِrulings بَلrather شَحَطَتhas grown distant
حالُthe condition المَياسيرِof the wealthy عَنfrom حالِthe condition المَحاوِجِof the needy
Affluence is not like destitution in rulings; rather, far removed
is the condition of the wealthy from that of the needy.
