إِرمِناcast us ياO ظَلامُdarkness فيinto كُلِّevery فَجٍّmountain pass
فَالمُنىfor hopes لَمnot تَزَلcease تَجُرُّdrag along المَناياdeaths
Cast us, O darkness, into every mountain pass.
For hopes have never ceased to drag deaths along.
وَحَنىand bowed بائِسٌa wretched man عَلىat القُربِnearness جيداًa neck
لِوَداعٍfor farewell وَالعَيسُand the pale camels مِثلُlike الحَناياbows
And a wretched man bowed his neck nearby
in farewell, while the pale camels were like bows.
وَدُنّاour wish (likely intended reading) يَعَذولُO reproacher أَنّاthat we سَلِمناwe escaped
مِنfrom هَواناour passion وَلَمand did not نُدانِwe draw near to الدَناياbase deeds
We wish, O reproacher, that we had escaped
from our passion and never drawn near to base deeds.
إِنَّindeed جَهلاًfolly سَلميmy greeting لِآلto the kin of سُلَيمىSulayma
وَثَنائيand my praise عَلىof عِذابِsweet الثَناياthe front teeth
Surely my greeting to Sulayma’s kin is folly,
and so is my praise of sweet front teeth.
