Can the two youths be safe from calamity for a time,

While fate gives warning upon warning?

The likelier of the two to be greeted at dawn, in time, with death

Is this day; so be people of sound judgment.

It is new, yet time folds it away into decay,

And time brings back darkness after darkness.

    فَلَم تَزَل ذاتَ أَولادٍ وَأَخلامِ

    Your world shows no kindness in its friendship;

For it has always had children and intimates.

It is enough to make life a mote in the eye that it is reckoned a hurt,

And that it is spent in sickness and pain.

And my poverty does not cast me into my misfortunes,

Nor does my Islam keep me safe from them.

And people, amid overwhelming troubles, put their thoughts to work,

Like a herd grazing among saltbush and saltwort.

And they never strip guile or stratagems from

The tips of tawny spears or the tips of pens.

A friend has baffled you; but for a power that came before,

The joining of khāʾ and lām would not have been possible.

So let no deceiving woman beguile you through the days,

One of the beauties, by a gesture or by speech.

The boy draws away, even if his father disapproves,

    From needing ornaments and henna.

So refer your affairs, in whatever you undertake,

To one pure of defilements, all-knowing.
