Calamities have sworn that he shall remain tormented—

their brother—and have loosened every hand and forearm.

And none upon this earth is anything but destined

for sorrow; so let your conjectures range near and far.

    وَلا خَيرَ في الإِخوانِ إِن لَم تُساعِدِ

    When a calamity grows grave, a man aids his foe;

and there is no good in brothers unless you lend aid.

And death may shun those who rise to battle,

and visit by night the homes of women who remain at home.

So if you seek generosity, let it come from you unfettered,

and hold it above being bound by promises.

For the most welcome cloud to bestow bounty upon the earth

is a rain cloud that waters it while thunder is silent.

    And death descends without respite,

thus bringing low those whose fortunes rise.
