    Let no fortunate man be envied for his good fortune.

    Wretched is a life followed by woe.

    And sensation has plunged the living into their misery.

    And Time has armies that make no clamor.

    If the earth knew what its inhabitant does,

    its wonder at what he brings about would long endure.

    فَهَل تَوَدُّ جُمادى أَنَّها رَجَبُ

    The beginning of happiness is not to have been created a woman;

    does Jumada, then, wish that she were Rajab?

    لَكِنَّكَ العودُ إِذ يُلحى وَيُنتَجَبُ

    Nor did you repent through a freely chosen resolve;

    but you are the stick when it is scraped and stripped of bark.

    وَإِنَّما أَنتَ لِلنَكراءِ مُحتَجِبُ

    And you did not withdraw from people out of piety;

    rather, you hide away only because of calamity.

    My soul said to me, 'I am in pain, with grit in my eye.'

    So I said, 'Patience and submission—so it must be.'
