When a young man puts his mind to work, he regards wealth

in money as poverty, and joy in it as sorrow.

He is a steward for humankind, giving freely,

and for his heirs if he wishes to hoard it.

And what decay scatters becomes like a poem

    Ubayd composed, observing no meter.

And on earth is one who asks the sword to rain down his sustenance,

when some among the people ask the clouds for rain.

    أَجَل وَوَطِئنا فَوقَها السَهلَ وَالحَزنا

    Through it we have known time's good and its evil;

yes, upon it we have trodden level ground and rough.

And some people hope to drink from a mirage,

and they will yet take the measure of calamities, as we have.
