تَغَيَّبتُI secluded myself فيin مَنزِليmy home بُرهَةًfor a while
سَتيرَwell-concealed العُيوبِfaults فَقيدَfree of الحَسَدenvy
I secluded myself in my home for a while,
my faults concealed, free from envy.
فَلَمّاthen when مَضىhad passed العُمرُlife إِلّاexcept for الأَقَلَّthe smallest portion
وَحُمَّand was decreed لِروحيfor my soul فُراقُparting from الجَسَدthe body
Then, when all but a little of my life had passed,
and my soul's parting from the body was decreed,
بُعِثتُI was sent شَفيعاًas an intercessor إِلىto صالِحٍSalih
وَذاكَand that مِنَon the part of القَومِthe people رَأيٌa judgment فَسَدwas unsound
I was sent as an intercessor to Salih—
an unsound judgment on the people's part.
فَيَسمَعُso he hears مِنّيfrom me سَجعَthe cooing of الحَمامِdoves
وَأَسمَعُand I hear مِنهُfrom him زَئيرَthe roaring of الأَسَدthe lion
So he hears from me the cooing of doves,
and I hear from him the lion's roar.
فَلاso let not يُعجِبَنّيdelight me هَذاthis النِفاقُpopularity; marketability
فَكَمfor many an نَفَّقَتhas made marketable مِحنَةٌordeal ماwhat كَسَدhad failed to sell
So let this popularity not delight me:
for many an ordeal has found a market for unsold wares.
