Salih has turned hostile; so the Dabab of Qays

are lizards guarding themselves against being lured out.

For they have departed, not driven off by a shout

to frighten them, nor pierced by a feathered shaft.

Surely a horseman's blow on a day of war,

sending your soul flying with your skull's splinters,

is easier on you than a long illness

and death afterward upon a bed,

and a death like that of Abu Dhu'ayb,

and a snakebite like that of Abu Khirash.

I see us in a bewildering wilderness, and

man's death refuses every briber's bribe.

The lions of time devour every living thing,

and we are now young beasts being baited.

    فَقُل ما شِئتَ في كَلبَي هِراشِ

    The two adversaries began tugging at a matter;

so say what you will of two dogs locked in a fight.

Like fruits, though they have committed no sins,

while the spears of contention clash,

so at times their descent is traced to Ma'add,

and at times their descent is traced to Irash.
