    By your life, the young woman's husband is no prudent man

    When the drinking companions sing in his quarter,

    فَإِمّا رَنوا نَحوَ الظَعينَةِ أَو زَنَّوا

    He comes home heedlessly with wine and drinking companions;

    Then either they gaze toward the woman or commit adultery.

    وَعُذتُ بِهِ فيما تَمَنَّوا وَما مَنَّوا

    May their Lord see them in a state that people abhor;

    And I sought refuge in Him from what they wished for and what they promised.

    I wished, as God knows, that my companions

    Would leave me alone in every circumstance, never making me one of a pair.

    If the inhabitants of the lands are as they are,

    Pay no heed if they use a diminutive of your name or an honorific byname.

    رُوَيدُكَ يَذهَبُ عَنكَ عارِضُ هَذا النَو

    An ignorant man competes for the paltry world;

    Be patient: the cloud of this storm will pass away from you.

    Across the spacious earth its people journey,

    And what they raised there and what they built is left behind.
