    وَنَحنُ بَعدَهُم مَعَ الأَرضِ قُطّانُ

    The passing of the righteous, all together, is sorrow enough for you;

    and after them we remain, dwelling upon the earth.

    Indeed, Iraq and Syria have, for some time,

    stood empty, with no sovereign authority in either.

    في كُلِّ مِصرٍ مِنَ الوالينَ شَيطانُ

    Devils given power have ruled humankind;

    in every city, among the governors, a devil—

    one who cares nothing if all the people go hungry,

    so long as he spends the night drinking wine, his belly full.

    Their natures are alike: the Byzantine's speech

    is like the Arabs', while the Ta'i babbles in a foreign tongue.

    كَأَنَّ أَرماحَهُم في الحَربِ أَشطانُ

    As for Kilab, they are of more use than their foxes;

    their spears in war seem like long ropes.

    When will a leader arise to win us redress,

    so generations and lowlands may know justice?

    Pray wherever you wish, for the lands are foul,

    as though all were camels' resting grounds beside the water.
