The cheer of bygone days, and youth,

have betrayed their people in Shasha and in Shash.

And this Time still reins in unruly steeds

with bridles, and reins in a stud camel with a nose-peg.

And it sends a falcon, let loose for Death,

so it captures a nimble man from among our heroes.

It strikes the wielder of unerring arrows, and attacks

amid spear-thrusts in battle, with a blood-spattering blow.

By my life, though silent, he has indeed called out—

Mukaththam—for a long time: 'Depart in haste!'
