    O God of all creatures and Lord of the clouds,

    Poverty is ours, not Yours, and dominion is Yours.

    When I do not live in pleasure,

    I grieve, and the heavens close in on me.

    وَلَكِن أَوَدُّ لِقاءَ المَلَك

    And, unlike Moses, I do not fear death;

    but I long to meet the angel.

    وَما اِبيَضَّ فَودي حَتّى حَلَك

    The life of mortals is a road to extinction;

    and my temple's hair turned white only after it had been black.

    When a boy's family congratulate one another

    over him, their congratulations mean death.

    Have you two not seen that the thread of time

    has destroyed al-Sulayk and destroyed the partridge?
