إِذاwhen حَضَرَتgathers عِنديin my presence الجَماعَةُthe company أَوحَشَتcauses loneliness
فَماfor ... not وَحدَتيmy solitude إِلّاexcept صَحيفَةُa page إيناسيmy solace
When company gathers in my presence, it makes me feel lonely;
for my solitude is but a page of my solace.
طَهارَةُpurity مِثليof one like me فيin التَباعُدِkeeping apart عَنكُمُfrom you
وَقُربُكُمُand nearness to you يَجنيreaps هُموميmy cares وَأَدناسيand my impurities
Purity for one like me lies in keeping far from you;
and nearness to you yields my cares and my stains.
وَأَلقىand gave إِلَيَّto me اللُبَّreason عَهداًa charge حَفِظتُهُI kept it in mind
وَخالَفتُهُyet I defied it غَيرَnot المَلولِone easily wearied وَلاnor الناسيone who forgets
And reason gave me a charge I kept in mind;
yet I defied it, neither weary nor forgetful.
وَأَعجَبُand I marvel مِنّيat myself كَيفَhow أُخطِئُI err دائِماًalways
عَلىdespite أَنَّنيthat I am مَنamong أَعرَفِthe most knowledgeable الناسِpeople بِالناسِabout people
And I marvel at myself—how I always err,
though I am among those who know people best.
نَصَحتُكِI counseled you ياO أُمَّmother of البَناتِdaughters فَحاذِريso beware
وَساوِسَwhisperings وَلّاجِone who repeatedly slips into الأَساوِدِthe crowds خَنّاسِone who slinks away
I have counseled you, O mother of daughters, so beware
the whispers of the skulker who slips among the crowds.
وَلاand do not تُلبِسيdress in الحِجلَينِthe two anklets بِنتَكِyour daughter وَالبُرىand bracelets
لِتَشهَدَso that she may attend عُرساًa wedding وَاِشغِلَنهاand keep her busy بِعِرناسِwith a spindle
And do not adorn your daughter with anklets and bracelets
to attend a wedding; keep her busy with a spindle.
