إِذاwhen ماan emphatic particle اِستَهَلَّcries at birth الطِفلُthe infant قالَsay وُلاتُهُhis guardians
إِذا ما اِستَهَلَّ الطِفلُ قالَ وُلاتُهُ
وَإِنand even if صَمَتواthey remain silent عانِendure الخُطوبَcalamities وَرَشقَهاand their volleys
وَإِن صَمَتوا عانِ الخُطوبَ وَرَشقَها
When the infant gives his first cry, his guardians say—
Even if they are silent—“Endure calamities and their volleys.”
شَقيناwe have suffered بِدُنياناin our world عَلىdespite طولِthe long duration of دُدِّهاits diversions
شَقينا بِدُنيانا عَلى طولِ دُدِّها
فَدونَكَso, take it مارِسهاgrapple with it حَياتَكَthroughout your life وَاِشقَهاand suffer in it
فَدونَكَ مارِسها حَياتَكَ وَاِشقَها
We have suffered in our world, despite its long-lasting diversions;
So take it: grapple with it all your life, and suffer in it.
وَلاand do not تُظهِرَنَّever display الزُّهدَascetic detachment فيهاtoward it فَكُلُّناfor each of us
وَلا تُظهِرَنَّ الزُّهدَ فيها فَكُلُّنا
شَهيدٌa witness بِأَنَّto the fact that القَلبَthe heart يُضمِرُconceals عِشقَهاlove for it
شَهيدٌ بِأَنَّ القَلبَ يُضمِرُ عِشقَها
And never make a show of renouncing it, for each of us
Bears witness that the heart conceals its love for it.
