They have kindled light with dark-red wine that loosed bridles,

yet had no thought of bridling or saddling.

They drink at dawn while the rooster’s eye sleeps,

with wine like the rooster’s eye, richly fragrant.

It crept like ants through their fingertips,

with something coursing, ever creeping through the company’s heads.

It eases their care—no, rather, they gain more

distress from misgivings that never meant to bring relief.

They did not know that fates would bring them down

violently, from atop palaces and towers.

Nor do I see degrees of merit being of any use

to a young man once he is hurried away to be shrouded.

    لَكِنَّني لِإِلهي خائِفٌ راجي

    As for life, I do not hope for its additional gifts;

but toward my God I am both fearful and hopeful:

Lord of al-Simāk, and Lord of the rising sun,

and of every radiant star that comes forth in darkness.
