لَوif كانَwas يَدريhe knows أُوَيسُUways ماجَنَتwhat it had wrought يَدُهُhis hand
لَاِختارَhe would have chosen دونَrather than مُغارِraiding الثَلَّةِthe flock العَدَماnonexistence
If Uways knew what his hand had wrought,
he would have chosen nonexistence rather than raiding the flock.
فَإِنَّfor indeed مِنamong أَقبَحِthe foulest الأَشياءِthings يَفعَلُهُhe commits it
شاكيone complaining of المَجاعَةِhunger يَوماًone day أَنto يُريقَhe sheds دَماblood
For among the foulest deeds committed
by one suffering hunger is to shed blood, even once.
ياO أَوسُAws هَيهاتَfar from it! كَمhow often قابَلتَyou faced هاجِرَةًa scorching noon
أَذكَتit kindled عَلَيكَagainst you وَقودَthe fuel of الحَرِّthe heat فَاِحتَدَماso it blazed fiercely
O Aws, far from it! How often you have faced a scorching noon
that kindled heat's fuel against you till it blazed!
وَكَمand how often طَرَقتَyou raided by night عَتوداًa young he-goat بَينَamong أَعنِزَةٍshe-goats
يَوماًone day فَفَرَّيتَso you slashed منfrom أَحشائِهِits entrails الأَدَماthe hides
And how often you raided a young he-goat among she-goats,
then slit the skin over its entrails that day!
مُطَرَّداًdriven away بِتَّyou spent the night لَمdid not تَبنِyou build الخِيامَthe tents ضُحىًin the forenoon
وَلاnor تُراعُyou are alarmed إِذاwhen ماan emphatic particle بَيتُكَyour dwelling اِنهَدَماcollapsed
Driven out, you spent the night; you pitched no tents in the morning,
nor are you alarmed when your dwelling collapses.
وَماand not كَسَوتَyou clothed إِذاwhen قَرٌcold أَتىcame جَسَداًa body
وَلاnor حَذَوتَyou shod حِذاراًfor fear لِلوَجىof foot-soreness قَدَماa foot
And you clothed no body when the cold came,
nor shod a foot for fear of soreness.
جَمَعتَyou combined فيin كُلِّevery رِيٍّquenching of thirst سَلَّةًtheft وَرَدىًand the death of
نَفسٍa soul فَهَلّاso why not سَرَقتَyou stole القُرصَthe round loaf وَالحَدَماand the hot bread
With every draught you combined theft and the death
of a soul; why did you not steal the loaf and the hot bread?
قَدmay يَقصُرُhe confines النَفسَthe self إِعظاماًin reverence لِبارِئِهِfor his Maker
عَلىto القَفارِthe barren wastes مَنيبٌa penitent طالَماfor a long time اِئتَدَماhe ate bread with condiments
One may confine himself, in reverence for his Maker,
to barren wastes—a penitent long used to bread with condiments.
وَلاnor تَصومُyou fast لِوَجهِfor the sake of اللَهِGod مُحتَسِباًseeking divine reward
أَمor غَيرَother than صَومِكَyour fasting أَمسىbecame الهَمَّthe worry وَالسَدَماand the grief
You do not fast for God's sake, seeking His reward;
or has anything but your fasting become your worry and grief?
أَتُضمِرُdo you inwardly intend التَوبَrepentance مِنfrom ضَأنٍsheep تُرَوِّعُهاyou terrify them
أَمor كانَwas ذَلِكَthat داءًa sickness فيكُمُamong you قُدُماlong ago
Do you intend to repent of terrorizing sheep,
or has that been an age-old sickness in your kind?
وَلَوand if ظَفِرتَyou got hold عَلىin حالٍsome circumstance بِحالِيَةٍof a bejeweled woman
جَزَّأتَهاyou cut her to pieces وَنَبَذتَand you cast aside السورَthe bracelets وَالخَدَماand the anklets
And if ever you caught a woman adorned with jewels,
you would cut her to pieces and cast aside her bracelets and anklets.
وَهَلand have نَدِمتَyou felt remorse عَلىfor طِفلٍa child فَجِعتَyou bereaved بِهِof him
أُماًa mother وَمِثلُكَand one like you لاdoes not يَستَشعِرُhe feels inwardly النَدَماremorse
And have you felt remorse for a child whose loss you inflicted on
a mother? Yet one like you feels no remorse.
وَلاnor يُوارىhe is buried إِذاwhen حَلَّتarrived مَنِيَّتُهُhis death
وَلاnor إِذاif ماتَhe died فيin غارٍa cave لَهُfor him رُدِماit was sealed up
And he is not buried when his appointed death comes,
nor, if he dies in a cave, is it sealed up for him.
وَكَمand how many ثَوىlay dead لَكَof yours جَدٌّan ancestor ماnot دَرىknew فَطِنٌa discerning one
مِنكُمamong you عَلىupon أَيِّwhat أَمرٍstate of affairs إِذwhen مَضىhe passed away قَدِماhe arrived
And how many a forebear of yours lay dead! No discerning one
among you knew what he encountered when he passed away.
