لَوif لَمnot تَكُنwere طَرقُthe paths هَذاthis المَوتُdeath موحِشَةًforbidding

If the paths of this death were not forbidding,
and dreaded, people would frequent them in throngs.

And whoever the world had cast harm upon
would seek them, leaving life its waves.
كَأسُthe cup المَنيَّةِof death أَولىmore fitting بيfor me وَأَروَحُand more restful ليfor me
مِنthan أَنto أُكابِدَI endure إِثراءًaffluence وَإِحواجاand want
The cup of death is more fitting for me and more restful,
than enduring affluence and want.
فيin كُلِّevery أَرضٍland صَروفٌturns of fate غَيرُnot هازِلَةٍjesting
يَلعَبنَthey play بِالناسِwith people أَفراداًsingly وَأَزواجاand in pairs
In every land are turns of fate that do not jest;
they play with people, singly and in pairs.
