The King transcends verse and prose,

and any account you relate on received authority.

In his presence, this sun dwindles until

it becomes like a dinar of ʿAthr.

And how many dwellings of men have fallen to ruin,

though once crowded with clamorous hosts and wealth.

If you grow rich in noble patience,

then, even if you lose your wealth, you are rich.

Many grow haughty over lofty attainments,

whether they have little or much.

I seek righteousness from the sons of this world,

but the souls of fools refuse to respond.

    وَكَيفَ إِثارَتي وَالمَوتُ إِثري

    And I prefer to protect them as best I can;

how could I provoke them, with death at my heels?

I fear drought in times of plenty,

and hope in drought for a time of abundance.

    And fate's scant-watered drawer overflows

when waters gather in every well.

And even if I chanced upon the Pleiades,

I would still be allied with my slips and stumbles.

And the folk of rugged land grieved, while those of the plain

found comfort in resting in soft earth.
