The man of this world is abased and trodden underfoot,

even if in his day he is called “the favored prince.”

Some calamity must strike his heart

with an arrow, so the hunter becomes the hunted.

I have lived on, and though continued life is dear,

yet I wished that life would grow no longer.

And I journeyed, my fetter firmly secured by misfortunes,

as a line of poetry travels though it is bound.

And life is only like a building: if it rises

beyond its limit, it is a lofty, towering edifice.
