    I wished I were one of Yalamlam's hills,

    so that when calamity came upon me, I would not stir.

    My mouth—the nights have robbed it, and indeed I

    drink from it as from a chipped vessel.

    مَتى يَنظُرا في نَيِّرِ العَينِ يُظلِمِ

    Dawn and pitch-dark night have destroyed the teeth's sheen;

    whenever they gaze into the eye's light, it darkens.

    So our departed are like dust, unable to speak,

    and those of us who remain are like wounded captives.

    فَمَن يَنَأَ عَنهُم يَسلُ عَنها وَيَسلَمِ

    Our world's inhabitants make it dear to us;

    whoever keeps far from them ceases longing for it and is safe.

    وَتَستَغنِ لا تَجهَل وَلا تَتَحَلَّمِ

    When you live apart, you envy no wealth, being rich;

    and, self-sufficient, you neither act rashly nor strain to be forbearing.

    Deceit and suspicion are among humankind's traits,

    and whoever draws close to them complains of injustice.

    So if the survivor asks the earth about peoples

    who came to rest in it, he is answered, though it does not speak.

    And the soul's dwelling in the body was a calamity,

    whether in the best of mysteries or the worst of known things.

    Has any age relented when Mercury had not even

    a clipped nail's sharp point on Wednesday?

    It is the dwelling where a man stays, then departs in the morning,

    and leaves it to the heir who takes possession.
