إِلَيكَtoward you وَخَيرٌyet better مِنهُthan him أَغَلبُa thick-necked lion أَصبَحُtawny
“A pleasant morning to you,” says one showing affection
Toward you; yet a thick-necked, tawny lion is better than he.
رَجَوتَyou hoped for بِقُربٍthrough nearness مِنto خَليلِكَyour close friend مَرحَباًa welcome
وَبُعدُكَyet your distance مِنهُfrom him فيin الحَقائِقِthe facts أَربَحُmore profitable
You hoped for a welcome through nearness to your friend,
Yet distance from him is, in truth, more profitable.

بِطُلسٍas dusky wolves تَعاوىhowling to one another أَوor ثَعالِبَfoxes تَضبَحyelping
If you do not flee humankind, then recognize them as
Dusky wolves howling to one another, or foxes yelping.
وَمارِسand contend with بِحُسنِwith good الصَبرِpatience بِلِواكَyour ordeal إِنif هُمُthey

And face your ordeal with steadfast patience; if they
Have done something vile, what you have done is viler.
تَروحُyou go in the evening إِلىto فِعلِthe deeds of السَفيهِthe fool وَتَغتَديand you go in the morning
وَتُمسيand you reach evening عَلىengaged in غَيرِother than الجَميلِwhat is good وَتُصبِحُand you reach morning
You go at evening to do a fool's deeds, and go at dawn;
And evening and morning find you doing what is not good.
كَأَنَّas though خُطوبَthe calamities of الدَهرِtime بَحرٌa sea فَمَنso whoever يَمُتdies
بِفَرطِfrom the intensity of صَداهُhis thirst فَهُوَthen he فيin اللُجِّthe deep يَسبَحُswims
It is as though time's calamities were a sea; so whoever dies
Of overwhelming thirst is swimming in the deep.
