    Stay; I do not count pilgrimage a duty

    for aged women, nor for maidens.

    For Mecca's gravel plain holds a people's elite,

    yet they are neither defenders nor jealous guardians.

    And Shayba's men, its custodians,

    when the throngs set out for its Kaaba,

    stand pushing the pilgrims in pairs

    into the Sacred House, while drunk.

    Once they take the counterfeit coins, they let them in,

    even if they are Jews or Christians.

    Whenever good lies within your power, do it,

    and say 'Yes' if righteousness calls you.

    Were 'the misguided' mentioned, you would recognize my uncovering

    of whatever gilded falsehood lay hidden.

    Do not trust what they have fashioned and forged,

    for their horses have come racing one another.

    وَأَقضِيَةُ المُهَيمِنِ لا تُجارى

    They ran a while, and after a time will rest;

    and the All-Watching One's decrees cannot be rivaled.

    Perhaps this star's conjunction will turn

    bewildered nations toward the paths of guidance.

    For hunger and thirst have brought them to ruin,

    and their she-camels are exhausted in a deadly waste.

    I do not know whether those atop the Mahri camels

    are wiser, when I look, or the Mahri camels themselves.

    فَباتوا في ضَلالَتِها أُسارى

    A ruling power came to them, conquered, and grew mighty;

    so they became captives in its delusion.

    They thought purity bound to a people,

    and I swear that they are not among the pure.

    وَلَكِن في دُجُنَّتِها تَكارى

    Not all people's eyes have fallen asleep;

    but in its darkness they feign sleep.

    صُدورَهُمُ بِصِحَّتِهِ تَمارى

    Their speech contradicts what they conceal;

    their hearts question its truth.
