لَعَمريby my life لَقَدindeed أَوضَعتَyou hastened فيin الغَيِّerror بُرهَةًfor a time
فَماso what لَكَails you فيin رَكبِthe caravan of التُقىpiety غَيرَnot موضِعِhastening
By my life, you have indeed hastened in error for a time;
so why do you not hasten with the caravan of piety?
وَكَمand how much هُدَّhas been shattered مِنof ثَهَلانَThahlan شامِخُthe towering part of طَودِهِits mountain
وَلَكِنyet تَرىyou see ثَهلانَThahlan لَمhas not يَتَضَعضَعِbeen shaken
And how much of Thahlan’s towering mountain has been shattered,
yet you see Thahlan has not been shaken.
حَلَبتَyou have milked الزَمانَTime العَودَthe aged camel أَشطُرَthe teats of ثِرَّةٍa copious milker
صَفيٍّrich in milk وَماand not تَنفَكُّyou cease مِنfrom جَهلِthe ignorance of مُرضِعِa suckling infant
You have milked old Time as one milks the teats of a bountiful
milch-camel; yet you still have a suckling’s ignorance.
فَدَعso leave عَنكَaway from you ذِكرَmention of البارِقيَّةِthe Bariqi woman تَعتَزيshe traces her origins
لِبارِقِto Bariq حَيٍّa tribe أَوor لِبارِقِto Bariq مَوضِعِa place
So leave off mentioning the Bariqi woman, who traces her origins
to Bariq, a tribe, or Bariq, a place.
إِذاif خَضَعَتbow أَعناقُthe necks of رَهطٍa group of men لِكِفرِهِمto their unbelief
فَأعناقُthen the necks of طُلّابِseekers of الهُدىguidance غَيرُnot خُضَّعِbowed
If a people’s necks bow to their unbelief,
the necks of those seeking guidance are not bowed.
