لَعَمريby my life لَقَدindeed نامَslept الفَتىthe young man عَنheedless of حِمامِهِhis death
لَعَمري لَقَد نامَ الفَتى عَن حِمامِهِ
إِلىuntil أَنthat أَتاهُcame to him حَتفُهُhis doom مُتَوَسِّناdrowsy
إِلى أَن أَتاهُ حَتفُهُ مُتَوَسِّنا
By my life, the young man indeed slept, heedless of his death,
By my life, the young man slept away from his goal
until his doom came upon him as he dozed.
Until death came to him while he was resting
إِذاwhen ماemphatic particle فَعَلتَyou did الخَيرَgood فَاِجعَلهُthen make it خالِصاًpure; sincere
إِذا ما فَعَلتَ الخَيرَ فَاِجعَلهُ خالِصاً
لِرَبِّكَfor your Lord وَاِزجُرand restrain عَنfrom مَديحِكَpraising you أَلسُناtongues
لِرَبِّكَ وَاِزجُر عَن مَديحِكَ أَلسُنا
Whenever you do good, do it solely
When you do good, make it sincere
for your Lord, and restrain tongues from praising you.
For your Lord, and restrain tongues from praising you
فَكَونُكَfor your existence فيin هَذيthis الحَياةِlife مُصيبَةٌa calamity
فَكَونُكَ في هَذي الحَياةِ مُصيبَةٌ
يُعَزّيكَconsoles you عَنهاfor it أَنto تَبُرَّbe righteous وَتُحسِناand do good
يُعَزّيكَ عَنها أَن تَبُرَّ وَتُحسِنا
For your existence in this life is a calamity;
For you being in this life an affliction
your consolation for it is to be righteous and do good.
