لَعَمريby my life لَقَدindeed فَضَحَdisgraced الأَوَّلينَthe ancients
ماwhat كَتَبوهُthey wrote it وَماand what سَطَّرواthey set down
By my life, the ancients have indeed been disgraced
By my life, they have exposed the ancients
by what they wrote and what they set down.
and what they wrote and composed.
وَقَدand indeed عَلِمَknew اللَهُGod أَنَّthat العِبادَthe servants
إِنif يُرزَقواthey are granted نِعمَةًa blessing يَبطَرواthey grow insolent
And God knows well that His servants,
God knows that when people are granted a blessing,
if granted a blessing, grow insolent.
they become conceited.
وَإِنand if عَجِبواthey marvel لِاِحتِباسِat the withholding of الغَمامِthe clouds
فَأَعجَبُthen more astonishing مِنthan ذاكَthat أَنthat يُمطَرواthey are rained upon
And if they marvel at the clouds being withheld,
And if they wonder at the withholding of rain clouds,
then more astonishing still is that rain falls upon them.
even more amazing is that they are rained upon,
كَأَنَّهُمُas though they لِقَديمِbecause of age-old الضَلالِerror
جِمالٌcamels عَلىalong نَهجِهاtheir path تَقطُرُmove in single file
Through their age-old error, they seem like
as if they are camels from past times of error
camels following their path in single file.
dripping down its path.
إِذاwhen القَومُthe people صامواthey fast فَعافواand so they shun الطَعامَfood
وَقالواand they utter المُحالَfalsehood فَقَدthen indeed أَفطَرواthey have broken their fast
When people fast and shun food,
When people fast and abstain from food,
yet utter falsehood, they have indeed broken their fast.
yet say the impossible, they have broken their fast.
