اِستَرَدَّtook back الحَياةَlife مِنكِfrom you لَعَمرُby the life of الthe beginning of “God”
اِستَرَدَّ الحَياةَ مِنكِ لَعَمرُ ال
لَهِcompletion of “God” مَنthe one who كانَwas لِلحَياةِto life مُعيراa lender
لَهِ مَن كانَ لِلحَياةِ مُعيرا
By God's life, he has taken life back from you—
the one who lent life in the first place.
رُبَّماperhaps تَدرُجينَyou will creep فيamong أَوَّلِthe foremost of النَمthe beginning of “ants”
رُبَّما تَدرُجينَ في أَوَّلِ النَم
لِcompletion of “ants” إِذاwhen ماindeed عَدَونَthey ran عيراًa caravan فَعيراthen another caravan
لِ إِذا ما عَدَونَ عيراً فَعيرا
Perhaps you will creep at the head of the ants
when they race along, caravan after caravan.
وَتَحُلّينَand you will stop قَريَةًat a village فَسَقاكِand gave you to drink الthe beginning of “death”
وَتَحُلّينَ قَريَةً فَسَقاكِ ال
مَوتُcompletion of “death” كَأساًa cup كَماjust as سَقاهاit gave her or it to drink البَعيراthe camel
مَوتُ كَأساً كَما سَقاها البَعيرا
And you will stop in a village, where death will give you
a cup, as it gave the camel there to drink.
أَتُرَجّينَdo you hope مِنfrom إِلهَكِyour God عَفواًpardon
أَتُرَجّينَ مِن إِلهَكِ عَفواً
وَتَخافينَand you fear فيat الحِسابِthe reckoning السَعيراthe blaze
وَتَخافينَ في الحِسابِ السَعيرا
Do you hope for pardon from your God
while fearing the blaze at the reckoning?
لُعِنَcursed be الحِرصُgreed كَمhow much تَحَكَّرتِyou hoarded قوتاًfood
لُعِنَ الحِرصُ كَم تَحَكَّرتِ قوتاً
ثُمَّthen خَلَّفتِyou left behind بُرَّهُits wheat وَالشَعيراand the barley
ثُمَّ خَلَّفتِ بُرَّهُ وَالشَعيرا
Cursed be greed! How much food you hoarded,
then left behind its wheat and barley.
